Road Funds convene to tackle innovative Models for Sustainable Financing of Road Infrastructure

Road Funds in the Southern African Region are set to convene for a three day Southern Africa Focal Group meeting hosted by the Road Fund in Luanda, Angola from November 08 to 10, 2022.

The Road Fund Lesotho Team, led by the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Nkekeletse Makara, will join counterparts during this meeting which will be convened under the mother body known as African Roads Maintenance Funds Association (ARMFA) through its Southern Africa arm known as ASAFG (ARMFA Southern Africa Focal Group).

The purpose of the meeting is for members to keep abreast with developments in the funding of roads sector, and to jointly celebrate milestones as well as tackle challenges that Road Funds in the region encounter, including jointly devising possible solutions to the challenges.

At the meeting, all member countries (Angola, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe) are expected to present on the pre-determined theme for the meeting namely “Innovative models for sustainable financing of road infrastructure”.

Other topics to be discussed at the ASAFG meeting include the challenges of regional corridors mobility, integration and trade; transparency in procurement and funding of road infrastructure maintenance contracts as well as the importance of integrated public safety and technological support for the virtual toll system.

The ASAFG meeting is held at least twice a year and it rotates amongst members. It is a platform for collaboration and it also prepares for the Annual General Meeting where all Road Funds in Africa convene to share ideas on better ways of responding to the ever rising road maintenance needs. The last ASAFG meeting was hosted by the Road Fund Lesotho.

ARMFA is a non-profit making and non-political association that was founded in the year 2003 in Libreville, Gabon. The aim is to form a platform and a network for experience and information sharing on best road maintenance practices in Africa; to discuss and find opportunities on funding options and to promote and strengthen links between members of African Road Funds.
