In line with its mandate, which is to support road user safety initiatives, the Road Fund has sponsored the Road Safety Department to procure 50 reflective vests for the Military Police; for use during Road Safety awareness campaigns.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony, Mrs. Ntumeleng Ntšekhe- Moloinyane, the Public Relations Manager of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport indicated that Road Safety Department heavily relies on the support and assistance of the Military Police for the success of the campaigns. She acknowledged the significant security provided by the Military Police, which greatly contributes to the effectiveness of their campaigns.
Mrs. ‘Makhabang Lebesa, the Principal Instructor Road Safety Department highlighted the positive impact of including the Military Police in their campaigns, explaining that previously, the Road Safety Officers would sometimes face bullying and abuse from the road users, but with the security provided by the Military Police, such incidents no longer occur.
On her part, the Director Road Safety Department Dr. Kinini Mathews expressed appreciation for the effective support provided by the Military Police. She reiterated that their presence has enabled Road Safety Officers to carry out their duties without fear or abuse, which they had experienced in the past.
Dr. Mathews also extended her gratitude to the Road Fund for its continuous support in most road safety initiatives, adding that without Road Fund’s support her Department would not achieve as much as it does now.
When receiving the reflective vests, the Lesotho Defence Force Major Monese Ramahlele conveyed the Military Police’s gratitude and appreciation for the gift. He appreciated the fact that Road Safety Department’s included the Military Police in the budget, saying that was a true sign of a partnership.
He said that they had no idea that they were being observed, let alone that their efforts were being recognised, therefore they were content and highly appreciative of the impact they have made to the road safety campaigns. He encouraged the Military Police to continue with their hard work, as their efforts are highly recognised and valued, not only by the Road Safety Department but probably the nation at large.
The 50 reflective vests cost the Road Fund a total of M34 000.00
