The Road Fund Board Chairperson Mr. Makotoko Makotoko and the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Nkekeletse Makara paid a courtesy call on the newly appointed Minister of Finance Mr. Thabo Sefonea, at his offices at Qhobosheaneng in Maseru on Friday Jun 12, 2020.
The aim of the courtesy call was to put the Minister up to speed of what Road Fund does and to get his mandate and expectations.
The meeting was the first after the Minister of Finance was sworn into office on May 25, 2020.
The Road Fund, which was established by Legal Notice No.179 of 1995 and operationalised by the Finance (Road Fund) Regulations 2012 is dedicated to the funding of maintenance of roads. The Fund is answerable to the Ministry of Finance.
The main reason for establishing the Fund, like many other countries in the World, was to shift the burden of financing maintenance of Lesotho’s road infrastructure from general taxes collected by the central government to road user fees, and to close the persistent financing gaps that characterized road maintenance prior to the establishment of the Fund.
