New Breathalyzers and Speed Cameras-Road Fund sponsors

In an effort to fulfill part of its mandate, which is to ensure safety of road users on the country’s roads, the Road Fund has sponsored procurement of thirty (30) Breathalyzers and 2 Speed Cameras for the Lesotho Mounted Police Services (LMPS); purchased through the Road Safety Department, under the Ministry of Transport.

The equipment was handed over to LMPS as a recent ceremony held at the Police Headquarters in Maseru.  In his speech during the handing over ceremony, the Minister of Transport Mr. Tšoeu Mokeretla said over speeding and drunken driving have been key concerns of safety on the roads, and have therefore caused lives of many.

He pleaded that the equipment be used efficiently for the intended use, so as to reverse the statistics of unnecessary deaths causes by drivers who fail to abide by the road traffic laws of the country.

Accepting the equipment, the Minister of Police and Public Safety Mr. Lepota Sekola thanked the Road Fund for extending a helping hand once again, adding that the equipment will go a long way in improving the work of Traffic Officers while they are enforcing the law.

He requested Road Fund to consider more similar assistance so that the equipment can assist Police Posts throughout the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of Road Fund Mr. Nkekeletse Makara reiterated that as the Fund is mandated to ensure safety of road users, it was befitting to sponsor this equipment which will ensure that road users comply with the law in order to stay safe on the roads.

Road Fund also sponsored jackets and hats for the Traffic Police Officers. The equipment and material have cost road Fund close to M1 Million.
