Lesotho to learn from Zambia on inland tolling- Road Fund CEO tells Zambian Media

The Road Fund Chief Executive Officer Mr. Nkekeletse Makara says Lesotho and other countries in the Southern Africa Region will learn from Zambia on how best to implement inland tolling so as to collect more revenue towards sustainable maintenance of roads.

He said this when addressing the Zambian media representing various media houses, just after the opening ceremony of the African Road Maintenance Funds Association (ARMFA) Southern Africa Focal Group Meeting held in Lusaka, Zambia.

He said Zambia has been very bold to implement this initiative, which has indeed contributed much as a revenue stream, to ensure that the roads are well maintained especially in places where the tolling is implemented.

“In Lesotho we conducted a study which recommended roads that could be earmarked for inland tolling, however the study probably needs to be updated as it was conducted in 2010 and a lot has changed in the road sector since then”, he added.

The Road Funds from Southern Africa are gathered in Lusaka, Zambia to prepare for the ARMFA Annual General Assembly, to take place in Dakar, Senegal in March 2020.

The meeting started on Monday February 17, 2020 and will end on Tuesday February 18, 2020.

The ARMFA Southern Africa Focal Group meets bi-annually, mainly to share information and experiences on good practices in the financing of road maintenance in the region. This group then joins the other regional groups once a year for the ARMFA Annual General Assembly, which is at continental level.
